How to define the pattern of helicopter usage in India

Helicopters suppliers in India will be quick to point out that the pattern for civil use of helicopters in India is very different than for the rest of the globe. Bell helicopters India has been around in India now for over a decade and yet have to find the perfect solution to break into this huge but a very typical market.

Around 30 percent of the civil helicopters in the world, if you remove India from the count, use them for both emergency medical services as well as for law enforcement in one way or the other. Many helicopters are also used as coast guards. However, this use in India is at best negligible. Law enforcement in India has largely ignored the potential of the helicopters in India till one day. This groundbreaking moment was when the law agencies decided to push against Maoists in around eight states of India and use their helicopters for it.

Since those days, many states in India have either acquired a few helicopters or are contemplating purchasing more helicopters especially for law enforcement and rescue services. But the role of helicopters and their usage in India is still almost negligible if you compare it with the world data. None of the larger metropolitan police forces have any helicopters though they do intend to use civil helicopters in emergencies.

Around 40 helicopters are used for offshore operations and this small squadron makes up almost three fourth of the rotary wing power across the country. The bulk of the civil helicopters in India are used for private purposes or non-scheduled operations or business uses. A large number of helicopters who were being used by the private players since 2007 have changed their purpose. They figured if they make this change from business to the non-scheduled operation they can save on the hefty duty that the government started levying one fine day.

Operators of such trips make it difficult to distinguish between genuine non-scheduled work and business use when such operations are allowed to work, raise internal invoices and affect internal payments. Helicopter suppliers in India continue to operate in this loophole of the law which makes genuine and law-abiding players like Bell Helicopters India to sit out of the game as their helicopters are seen as too expensive.
